Aquaculture Support
The Aquaculture Branch delivers a
comprehensive extension services program that includes the provision
of environmental monitoring of sites, fish health services, and the
development of human and technological resources.
The Aquaculture Branch provides the following services
and funding
programs to the Newfoundland and Labrador aquaculture industry:
AquaGIS
This aquaculture specific geographic information system is designed to
provide aquaculture site information to aquaculturists and other
waterway users. The system includes a GIS component that is focused on
the south coast of the Province. The south coast GIS contains biological
and environmental information on a number of locations in the Bay
d’Espoir/Connaigre Peninsule/Fortune Bay region.

Extension Services
The Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture provides the following
extension services to the aquaculture industry:
- Environmental Biological Monitoring Program (shellfish & finfish)
- Aquatic Invasive Species Monitoring
- Site monitoring and site prospecting
- Biological support
The Department has three aquaculturists on staff to deliver these
services:

Fish Health Services
The Aquaculture Health Unit
services both finfish and shellfish species all over the Province. The

The Department has the following staff dedicated toward the delivery
of fish health services:
- aquaculture veterinarians
- Laboratory technicians

Fish health laboratory facilities are located in St. John’s, Grand
Falls-Windsor, and St. Alban’s.

Aquaculture Strategic Development Program
The Aquaculture Strategic Development Program will support growth in the provincial aquaculture industry by
providing funding to strategic areas. These may include diversifying production; maintaining competitiveness;
increasing capacity in the supply and service sector; improving product quality and enhancing sustainability.
These strategic initiatives will help ensure that the aquaculture industry continues to be a major economic
contributor to the provincial economy.
