Responsibilities

The main responsibilities include:

  • Coordination of the delivery of the Quality Assurance Program related to raw material inspections at dockside onboard vessels, transports and preproduction areas of plants to assess quality;
  • Act as Secretariat to the Fish Processing License Board, performing all administrative functions associated with the board;
  • Management of the licensing program for fish buyers and processors, and formulation and implementation of policies and legislation governing the marketing of fish in the province;
  • Liaising with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to coordinate inspection and certification of fish processing facilities and monitor landings at dockside.;
  • Collect and maintain statistics on fish production and fishery-related employment for the province;
  • Promoting proper ways to handle/store fish prior to processing to ensure top quality;
  • Delivering workshops, seminars to industry stakeholders on ways to improve quality and promote the province's marketing efforts; and
  • Developing policy guidelines to promote full utilization and value added processing to maximize economic and employment returns in the fishing industry.
