The Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture works with the seafood industry to enhance market awareness within the industry and increase seafood sales to markets in Asia, Europe, and the United States. Primary trade show efforts include:
Since its inception some 20 years ago, the Seafood Expo North America trade show (formerly the International Boston Seafood Show) has been a premier trade event for seafood producers and buyers throughout the world. It is held in Boston, Massachusetts every year, usually around mid-March. In 2014, over 1,000 exhibiting companies and nearly 20,000 visitors attended the show to do business, look for new products and keep abreast of industry trends. The Newfoundland and Labrador seafood industry has always been well represented at this event both as exhibitors and visitors. The department organizes a Newfoundland and Labrador pavilion with seafood companies and marketing organizations occupying part of this space. In addition, many of the province’s seafood companies and other industry stakeholders either have their own booths or exhibit with their distributors at the show. Started in 1995, the China Fisheries & Seafood Expo (CFSE) has become a world class event that featured over 1,070 exhibitors from 44 countries and 20,000 visitors from 100 countries in 2013. The CFSE 2013 hosted approximately 900 exhibiting companies. The department participates in the Canadian Pavilion at this event to promote Newfoundland and Labrador seafood and to facilitate export business for the Newfoundland and Labrador seafood industry.
